Hard water and salt cells: a North County story.

A salt cell makes chlorine by running current across titanium plates. Calcium loves those plates. On Vallecitos water in Vista and San Marcos, where the tap comes in at fourteen to eighteen grains, a cell can scale up in a few months — the plates crust white, the gap between them closes, the system throws an "Inspect Cell" or "Low Salt" warning even though the salt is fine, and chlorine output quietly falls off until the pool goes green in a warm week.

We look at your cell on every weekly visit; it's one of the things written on your report. When we can see scale bridging the plates, or the output percentage is climbing to make the same chlorine, it's time. We pull the cell, cap it, and soak it in a proper cell-cleaning solution at the right dilution — not straight muriatic acid, which eats the plate coating and shortens the cell's life every time it's done. Ten to fifteen minutes, rinse, look at the plates under light for flaking or thin spots, refit, and confirm the system reads it and is making chlorine.

How often

On coastal pools with softer water, twice a year is usually plenty. Inland on hard water, every three months is closer to it, and some pools need it more. The bigger lever is keeping the water itself right: a pool held at the correct pH and calcium hardness scales far slower than one that drifts high. That's the weekly chemistry doing its job. If your calcium has climbed past 400 ppm, no amount of cell cleaning will keep up, and we'll tell you it's time to talk about reverse osmosis instead.

When the cell is actually done

Cells wear out. The coating on the plates is consumed over years of use, and a cell that's clean but still can't make chlorine at full output is telling you that. We'll tell you plainly when we think that's what's happening, with the reading on your report, so you can decide what to do with a clear head. On our Full Service plan, routine cell cleaning is part of the schedule. On Standard Weekly, we flag it and quote it when it's needed.
