Reverse Osmosis and Pool Draining

Sometimes the problem isn't what's in the pool, it's the water itself. Every gallon of North County tap water brings calcium with it, every tablet brings stabilizer, and evaporation leaves all of it behind. After a few years the water is saturated: calcium over 400, stabilizer over 100, total dissolved solids past 2,000. Chlorine stops working, scale forms on everything, and no amount of balancing brings it back.

There are two ways to reset it. Mobile reverse osmosis pushes your existing water through membranes on a trailer at your curb and returns it clean, keeping most of the water in the pool. A drain-and-refill starts over from the tap. We test first and tell you which one your pool actually needs.

Know the Signs

• Cloudy water that won't clear. Balanced readings, clean filter, and still hazy: high TDS scatters light and filtration can't remove it.
• Calcium hardness over 400 ppm. Scale on the tile line, rough plaster, a salt cell that scales within weeks of cleaning.
• Stabilizer (cyanuric acid) over 100 ppm. Chlorine reads fine but algae keeps coming. The chlorine is locked up and shocking is wasted money.
• Total dissolved solids over 2,000 ppm. Water tastes salty on a non-salt pool, chemicals behave unpredictably, metal fixtures stain.
• Chemistry that won't hold. You add acid, chlorine and alkalinity every week and the readings drift back by Friday. Saturated water fights every adjustment.

RO, Drain, or Just Chemistry? The Numbers We Go By

Calcium under 400 and stabilizer under 90 usually means the water can still be managed with chemistry and a partial drain. Calcium above 400 or stabilizer above 100 means a reset. Reverse osmosis is the better choice when water is scarce or expensive, when the pool is plaster that shouldn't sit empty in summer heat, or when you'd rather keep the water you've already paid to heat.

A drain makes sense for smaller pools, for pools that need plaster work anyway, and when the water is far enough gone that RO would take longer than it's worth. Either way, you get the before-and-after readings.

If a Drain Is Right: Doing It Safely

Draining a pool wrong can float the shell out of the ground or crack plaster in a day of sun. We check groundwater, open the hydrostatic relief, time the drain for cool weather, keep the empty time short, and refill through a hose-bib filter so you don't start over with the same calcium. Water goes where the city says it can go. Then we start the fresh water correctly, balanced before the first swim.
