Water not as clear as it was in spring? Automatic cleaner crawling instead of cruising? Algae showing up in the same corner no matter how much you brush? Before you buy chemicals, look at the pressure gauge on your filter. When it reads eight to ten psi above its clean baseline, the filter is choked and your pool is barely being filtered at all. Everything too small for the skimmer and pump baskets, dust, pollen, sunscreen, skin oils, dead algae, ends up on the cartridge pleats or DE grids.

A loaded filter restricts flow, strains the pump, and lets fine debris slip back into the pool. It also has to be opened to be inspected: a torn pleat or cracked manifold sends dirt straight back into the water and you'll never see it from the outside.

We recommend a full filter clean and inspection every three months for most North County pools, sooner for pools under trees, on hard inland water, after a Santa Ana wind, or after a green cleanup. On weekly service we log your filter pressure every visit, so the clean gets scheduled by the gauge, not guesswork, and you'll hear from us before it's due.

You don't need to be home. The clean takes one to two hours on the pad, and we bundle it with a salt cell clean on the same visit when you have one.

Whether your pool runs a cartridge filter, a DE filter with grids, or an older sand filter, we service it as part of weekly pool service or as a one-time filter cleaning. A cartridge clean means every pleat rinsed, inspected for tears and flattened bands, and replaced when it has reached the end of its life rather than when a store wants to sell one.

A DE clean means the grids pulled, hosed, checked for pinholes, and recharged with the right amount of DE powder. On every job we reset the pressure gauge baseline, check the air relief and the tank o-ring, and write the clean pressure on the tank so anyone can see when it's time again. Filter parts that need a licensed contractor are referred, never sold.

How We Clean a Pool or Spa Filter, Step by Step

• Cartridge filters. Elements removed, hosed pleat by pleat, soaked and degreased when they need it, inspected for tears and crushed end caps, reassembled with the o-ring lubed.
• DE filters. Full teardown: grids pulled, hosed and inspected, manifold checked for cracks, tank cleaned, grids reassembled and recharged with fresh diatomaceous earth. Backwashes between teardowns as pressure calls for it.
• Sand filters. Backwash and rinse, lateral inspection, and a recommendation on media replacement (sand or glass) when the bed is channeling.

Filter Checks Built Into Your Weekly Pool Service

Every clean includes a look at the parts that fail: grids and cartridges, manifolds, o-rings, backwash and multiport valves, and the pressure relief. We'll tell you in writing what we found and what it means. Worn cartridges and torn grids are maintenance parts and we'll quote replacements; anything that needs a C-53 contractor is referred to our licensed partner.

Rule of thumb: clean quarterly, and any time the gauge is 8–10 psi over clean. A good weekly service checks the gauge every visit and schedules the clean before the water tells you.

We watch the pressure every week and schedule it for you.
